WLU Celebrates 175th Anniversary with Special Speakers

March 6, 2012 By WLU Webmaster

Among the many activities planned for the celebration of West Liberty University’s 175th birthday throughout the month of March is a series of speakers and lecturers from a variety of academic fields. All events will take place in the Boyle Conference Room on the WLU campus and will begin at noon, unless otherwise indicated.

The first scheduled talk will take place on March 6. Carrie White, director of the university’s Center for Entrepreneurship, will speak. The next day, President Robin C. Capehart will address the entire campus community at 12:30 p.m. in College Hall.

The Anniversary Speakers Series continues on March 9, as Sandy Czernek, instructor in history, talks about “The U.S. in 1837: Déjà vu All Over Again.”

On March 19, Lou Karas, director of the Center for Arts and Education, will discuss that new program and how it contributes to the WLU educational experience.

Brian Fencl, chair of the WLU department of Journalism, Communications Studies and Art, will speak on March 20 on “A 10-year View of West Liberty from the Other Side of Campus – A Look at Art, Music, Theater and Communications, Past, Present and Future.”

On March 21, Keely Camden, dean of the WLU College of Education, will provide an update on that school’s activities and progress.

WLU’s new broadcast advertisements will be introduced on March 23 by Jason Koegler, vice president of Institutional Advancement.

International students, a vibrant and growing community on the WLU campus, will discuss their experiences on March 26.  A “tea time” will precede the talk at 11 a.m.

The next day, on March 27, Dean Emeritus and former history professor David Javersak will talk about the history of WLU.

Two representatives of WLU’s Gary E. West College of Business will present “Business Education at West Liberty – Then, Now and Future” on March 28. Annette Godown is director of marketing and communications for the college, and John Bonassi is a recruiting consultant and adjunct instructor.

Zachary Loughman, a WLU instructor and nationally-recognized authority on crayfish, will discuss his research, “Native and Invasive – A Tale of Two Crayfish,” on March 29.

WLU Provost Anthony Koyzis will talk about the university’s history at 9 a.m. on March 30.
