Curtis Hall Resident Assistant staff and the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity helped out the ALS Association in their now-famous Ice Bucket Challenge with a successful team program.

“We were thrilled to send a $315 check to the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the ALS Association on behalf of Phi Delta Theta and Curtis Hall. We look forward to further programming and philanthropic events, so that we can raise more money for the ALS Association moving forward,” said Evan Newman, student government president.
Newman also is scholarship chairman and a philanthropy team member for the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.
The two student organizations teamed up to host “West Liberty Wipes out the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.”
The Curtis Hall Staff coordinated most of the event. The Brothers of Phi Delta Theta aided in set up, participation, and tear down for the event, according to Newman, who also is an RA.

Held outdoors on the Quad, it was a perfect fall afternoon (Sept. 29) for the student contestants who were timed as they went through different obstacles and ended up going face first into a pool of ice.
There were over 25 contestants and the winner of the female division was Courtney Carter. The winner of the male division was Brandon Galici.
Leading up to the joint program promoting finding a cure for ALS, the Brothers of Phi Delta Theta and Curtis Hall RAs tabled in the College Union. (September 20 – 26.) The workers were able to raise $315 for the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the ALS Association.
Members of the Curtis Hall staff used this as their Building Program credit, where the brothers of Phi Delta Theta used this as their Philanthropy event. Curtis Hall RA,
Camille Bernabei stated, “This program was more than a social event, it was an opportunity to raise awareness for a disease that effects more individuals than we realize.”
Newman, added, “This was a humbling opportunity for Phi Delta Theta to support their national philanthropy, the ALS Association. Phi Delta Theta is new to campus, therefore many don’t know that this is our philanthropy, and this was a good start for us. We would like to thank the Housing and Student Life Department for letting us work with them and look forward to working more with them.”
