SOS Show Opens in Nutting Gallery

October 1, 2018 By Maureen Zambito

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., Oct. 1, 2018 — West Liberty University’s latest art show, S.O.S.: The Pittsburgh Society of Sculptors Exhibition, features 22 works in a variety of media. Displayed in the Nutting Gallery, the exhibition will run through Oct. 17.

“I like how this show combined expressionist and whimsical sculptures with more realistic pieces. Every artwork here has something different to tell us,” said graphic design student Mimi Albon. A traveling exhibition, the show was jurored by Joy Borelli-Edwards.

Gloria by Gadi Leshem, earthenware clay.

“The Society of Sculptors works selected for this exhibition include a range of long practiced artists as well as those in the early stages of their career. From works that are of the highest production value to those that exude experimentation with the media, all of these works demand a response,” said Borelli-Edwards.

Refuge by Stan Koepke, soapstone.

Pieces include a variety of media including metal, clay, paper, wood, soapstone and terracotta.

Established in 1935 in Pittsburgh, The Society of Sculptors (SOS) was one of the founding organizations in the formation of the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, a non-profit community arts campus that offers arts

education programs and contemporary art exhibitions.

SOS encourages and nurtures new talent in the field of sculpture by organizing educational programs and workshops and by bringing together sculptors and individuals who appreciate sculpture, according to the website.

Located in the Hall of Fine Arts, the Nutting Gallery is dedicated to educating, enriching and engaging students and the public through art exhibitions of the highest quality and to promoting the visual arts within the WLU community.

The Nutting Gallery exhibition schedule includes five exhibitions by visiting artists, two Senior Exhibitions, and the Annual Art Faculty Exhibition.

The exhibitions are free and open to the public.
