New Scholarship Opportunity for Students who Serve the Community

April 14, 2015 By Maureen Zambito

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., April 14, 2015 — West Liberty University is pleased to announce the addition of a newly endowed scholarship, the George and Dolly Grim Memorial Scholarship.

George and Dolly Grim were devoted to WLU.

George and Dolly Grim were devoted to WLU.

“We are so grateful to the family of George and Dolly Grim for their generous support of our deserving students. It means a lot since this scholarship will assist WLU students at a time when the cost of higher education is a concern to everyone,” said Vice President of Institutional Advancement Jason Koegler.

George L Grim, Jr. was a graduate of West Liberty College and credited much of his success to the education he received at West Liberty. The Grim scholarship is now available to any West Liberty University student with a strong community service background and a financial need.

“One of my father’s goals was to give back to his University,” explained his son, John Grim of Atlanta, Ga. “As a family, we are very happy to make that happen.”

Both George and Dolly grew up and were married in Beech Bottom, W.Va. George passed away March 26, 2014, in Youngstown, Ohio at the age of 81 and Dolly passed in 1999. The couple had two sons, John and James. He also has a sister, Martha Augustine, of Beech Bottom.

Because of his strong advocacy for community service and for Boy Scout activities, preference will be given to WLU students who are Eagle Scouts and Gold Award Girl Scouts. Scholarship recipients also are asked to “pay it forward” and continue to serve when they achieve professional success.

He graduated from the former West Liberty State College with a Bachelor of Science degree and for many years worked as a consulting systems engineer at IBM. He also served in the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of Association for Systems Management, and served for a time as its president. He was very active in his community, serving in Kiwanis and in many other ways.

He was an Eagle Scout with a Silver Beaver Award and Bronze Pelican Religious Award serving on the advancement committee and Commission for Whispering Pines District BSA.

Because of his strong advocacy for community service and for Boy Scout activities, preference will be given to WLU students who are Eagle Scouts and Gold Award Girl Scouts. Scholarships students also are asked to “pay it forward” and continue to serve when they achieve professional success.

The scholarship is distributed annually and a student must reapply each year to receive it. Application are now available and must be completed by July 1, 2015. For more information, please contact Director of Financial Aid Katie Cooper at 304.336.8131.
