West Liberty University celebrates Homecoming Week from Oct. 14-19, with a variety of student, alumni and community events.
Homecoming activities kick off with the traditional student serenade competition that begins at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15, in College Hall. Each homecoming candidate pair is given a theme to develop entertainment for the performance of skits and dances in this competition. 2013 King and Queen candidates include:
- Jessie Boardman, St. Albans, W.Va. and Myron Jellison, Quaker City, Ohio
- Katelyn Comer, Martinsburg, W.Va. and Cody Schwertfeger, Wellsburg, W.Va.
- Felicia McCullough, Hannibal, Ohio and Allen Yoho, Moundsville, W.Va.
- Allison Durkin and Paul Henry, Wheeling (both)
- Camielle Bernabei,Weirton, W.Va. and Griffin Yocum, Glendale, W.Va.
- Kelly Haines, Waverly, W.Va. and Dylan Potts, Sardis, Ohio
- Julianne Wanda, Strongsville, Ohio and Scott Kaiser, Martins Ferry, Ohio
- Christopher Williams, East Liverpool, Ohio and Olivia Tarr, Wheeling
Throughout the day, Wednesday, Oct. 16, candidates will be campaigning on the quad, offering free goodies, including gifts and food, hoping to be elected. From 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. that same day, students actually vote for their choice of king and queen. Then on Thursday, Oct. 17, all the candidates are invited to attend a dinner hosted by the WLU Alumni Association to be held at the Aquinas Center.
At 7:30 p.m., Friday Oct. 18, WLU will host a pep rally on the Hoge Quadrangle. Students can also attend various festivities on the quad throughout the day as well as a homecoming themed dinner from 5 – 7 p.m., in the Marketplace cafeteria.
That same evening, alumni donors will be honored at an invitation only, Benefactors Gala at Stratford Springs Restaurant, Wheeling.
Dental hygiene alumni also will gather on both Friday and Saturday for continuing education classes and to mark the 75th Anniversary of the Dental Hygiene Program at Wheeling Park’s White Palace.
Saturday’s alumni events begin with the Alumni Wall of Honor Breakfast and Induction Ceremony that honors three distinguished alumni, Charlie Annett, Weston, Fla., Donald Bruno, University Park, Fla., and JoAnne Dunn, Patterson, N.Y., for their professional success, leadership and achievements.
At 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 19, the Hilltopper Homecoming Parade will start the festivities of homecoming day off appropriately. Students and alumni are invited to tailgate before and during the homecoming game when the Hilltoppers take on Urbana University, with kick-off at 1 p.m.
The 2013 West Liberty University Homecoming King and Queen will be announced during the halftime show.
Students end their homecoming festivities with a 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. dance at the Wheeling’s Wesbanco Arena.
Alumni end the weekend with a choice of two events, the Silver Bears Reception & Reunion (alumni age 55 and older), immediately following the football game at the Gary E. West Events Center, or the new All School Reunion, 8 p.m. – 12 a.m., at River City Restaurant, Wheeling.
