WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., Sept. 18, 2015 — West Liberty University presents John Morrison in a solo piano concert at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 25. The concert is free and open to the public and will take place in Elbin Auditorium, College Hall.
“Please join me for an evening of exciting and colorful piano performances. Professor Morrison’s challenging program features the following repertoire: Beethoven’s Op. 53 “Waldstein Sonata,” Brahms’ Op. 79 Rhapsodies, Chopin’s Barcarolle Op. 60, Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 2, Op. 14 and Ravel’s “Alborada del gracioso,” said Dr. Gerald Lee, professor of piano at WLU.
Morrison is a member of the music faculty in the School of Fine Arts at Fairmont State University (FSU). He teaches both piano and strings, and serves as choir and recital accompanist.
He has performed with the FSU choir on tours in Toronto, northern Virginia and Miami. Prior to FSU, he was an accompanist for West Virginia University’s Choral Union and a staff accompanist at the Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan.
A member of West Virginia Music Teachers Association (WVMTA), he was the site coordinator for the WVMTA State Conference hosted at FSU in the fall of 2014. Also the music director and organist of First Presbyterian Church in Fairmont, he directs the Chancel and Cambridge Handbell Choirs and plays the Moller pipe organ for services.
During the summers he has music directed and performed shows at FSU and West Virginia Public Theatre. He is an active freelance accompanist in the area, as well as violinist. Morrison holds a double bachelor’s degree in piano performance and French and a master’s in piano performance from WVU. His piano studies were with Dr. Marina Schmidt, Dr. Peter Amstutz, and Dr. Christine Kefferstan.
The concert is sponsored by the Division of Music at West Liberty University, which brings accomplished musicians and performing artists to campus throughout the year for the public and its students.
