Organized sports offers many benefits for youngsters and no one knows this better than coaches. That’s why two local football coaches are leading a new camp for children this summer as the MEGA Football Camp meets, July 21 – 23, at Wheeling Island Stadium.

“The camp is free and is a great introduction to the excitement and athleticism of football for young athletes,” said West Liberty University assistant football coach Abu Ma’afala, who handles special teams and running backs for the Hilltoppers. Ma’afala also is an instructor in the University’s Exercise Physiology Department.

“At West Liberty University, we focus on developing total athletes, who are academically focused as well as game day ready. This camp gives our players a chance to serve the community that supports us all year long. We’re happy to share our philosophy with area youngsters,” he said.

MEGA Football Camp is an outreach of the Vineyard Church, Wheeling, and will offer a positive and encouraging environment that pumps up confidence and self-esteem.

Parents are welcome to stay for the camp activity, added Ma’afala, who will be assisted by Wheeling Park High School football coach Chris Daugherty.

“Kids will learn the fundamentals and have time to talk, share stories and learn teamwork,” said Daugherty.

The camp meets from 6:30 – 8 p.m. daily and is open to both boys and girls age kindergarten through grade five. Athletic shoes are required.
