Will your son or daughter be attending college in the 17-18 academic year? Two major changes will be coming in completing your FAFSA! First, the FAFSA availability date is going to be October 1st, 2016. This is 3 months earlier than in the past! So instead of doing your FAFSA right after the New Year, you’ll be completing it during football season!
Second, you will be using older tax data than prior years. For instance, for the 2016-2017 academic year, you may have completed the FAFSA with your 2015 taxes which may have delayed your ability to complete the FAFSA until your taxes were completed. Now, for the 2017-2018 academic year and forward, you will be completing the FAFSA with the prior-prior year’s taxes. For example, on October 1, 2016, you’ll complete your FAFSA for the 2017-2018 academic year with your 2015 taxes that are already completed! No more waiting on your W-2’s, your accountant or having a chance at missing any deadlines! As always we still encourage you to complete your FAFSA as early as possible!
So in order to complete your FAFSA on October 1, 2016, you’ll need your FSAID, your 2015 taxes and your son or daughters 2015 taxes.
