Division of Music Honor Recital Features Five Talents

 West Liberty University’s Division of Music will hold its annual Honors Recital at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 4 in the Elbin Auditorium, College Hall. The event is free and open to the public.College Hall spring

“The annual Honors Recital celebrates and represents some of the finest musical talents in WLU’s Division of Music. Student performers are selected for the Honors Recital through a competitive audition, adjudicated by esteemed off-campus professional musicians,” said Associate Professor of Music Dr. Gerald Lee.

This years judges include: Bruce L. Ensinger, a music specialist in the Wetzel County School system who has taught at the New Martinsville School for 35 years; Curtis Johnson, a 20-year faculty member and retired associate professor of music at West Virginia University and West Liberty State College alumnus; and Zachary Marshall, assistant professor of music and director of the Bethany College choir.

The Honors Recital will feature five WLU students:

  • Alan Cline is a senior pursuing the Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance. He is from Wellsburg, W.Va. and is the son of Ruth Ann and Wayne Cline. Cline studies voice with Dr. Linda Cowan. Upon graduation, he plans to attend the Eastman School of Music as a graduate assistant pursuing the Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance and Literature.
  • Alexander Gordon is a freshman pursuing the Bachelor of Music degree in Music Technology. He is from Wheeling and is the son of Valleri and Brian Gordon. He studies piano with Dr. Gerald Lee and upon graduation, he plans to continue his studies in music at the graduate level.
  • Kevin Kalany is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies degree, with emphases in Music and Arts Management. He is from St. Clairsville, Ohio and is the son of Vicki and Phil Kalany. Kalany studies trombone with Professor Patrick Garrett. Upon graduation, he plans to work in arts management and continue to perform trombone.
  • Seth Keeney is a freshman pursuing the Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education. He is from Wheeling and the son of Jessica and Martin Massey. Keeney studies saxophone with Dr. Christopher Barrick. Upon graduation, he plans to teach music in the public schools and continue to perform saxophone.
  • Timothi Renee Williams is a senior pursuing the Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance. She is from Wellsburg, W.Va. and is the daughter of Tammy and Timothy Hunter Williams. Williams studies voice with Dr. Linda Cowan. Upon graduation, she plans to attend the Pennsylvania State University on a full scholarship and will debut there as the lead in their fall 2014 production of Little Women.

The Division of Music at West Liberty University offers undergraduate degrees in music education, music performance and music technology. Among its many ensembles are University Chorus, Wind Ensemble, Chamber Choir, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble and the Hilltopper Marching Band.

West Liberty University’s Division of Music is part of the College of Arts and Communications, which includes the departments of journalism, communication studies and visual arts, along with theatre and music. Undergraduate degrees are offered in music education, music performance and music technology.
