Choir Presents “Charity & Love” Concert

May 5, 2015 By Maureen Zambito

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., April 28, 2015 — Beautiful choral music performed by the West Liberty University Concert Choir will be presented in a Mother’s Day concert entitited, “Charity and Love.” The 3 p.m., Sunday, May 10 performance will take place at Vance Presbyterian Church, Wheeling and is open to the public.

“We will perform the beautiful Requiem by Gabriel Fauré and works by Duruflé, Ravel, Saint-Saëns, and others. This music is all about love and charity from different angles,” said Director of Choral Activities Scott Glysson. “Please join the Concert and University choirs for this special community performance.”

Dr. Scott Glysson conducts the choir in rehearsal.

“The choir will be accompanied by a professional orchestra,” noted Glysson. “The first half of our May 10 concert will be a preview of the Concert Choir tour repertoire.”

Featured in the performance is WLU alumnus Alan Cline ‘14, who is now enrolled in a master’s in music program at Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester (N.Y.). Cline is from Wellsburg, W.Va. The other featured artist is a boy soprano, Maksim Shcherbatyuk, 11, a member of Children’s Festival Chorus of Pittsburgh.

The choirs always perform a spring concert at Vance Church, just prior to beginning its tour, which is either national or international, depending on the schedule.

Other times, dates and locations for the 2015 concert tour are:

  • 7 p.m., May 12, Floris United Methodist Church, Herndon, Va.
  • 8 p.m., May 13, St. John the Apostle Church, Leesburg, Va.
  • 12:45 p.m., May 14, Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle, Washington, D.C.
  • 7:30 p.m., May 15, Grace United Methodist Church, Manassas, Va.

Glysson became the director of choral activities last July, following the retirement of longtime director Alfred de Jaager.

He earned his bachelor’s in music education with a concentration in choral conducting from the George Mason University School of Music and both a master’s and doctoral degree in choral conducting from the University of Arizona. As an assistant conductor of the George Mason University Chamber Chorus, he conducted choral groups in Russia, Australia, and Germany.

Begun in 2007, the WLU Concert Choir spring tour offers students a chance to perform in varied settings for international audiences and enjoy a memorable educational experience. Typically, the choirs travel overseas for the tour every other year.

The Division of Music offers undergraduate degrees in music education, music performance and music technology. Among its many ensembles are University Chorus, Wind Ensemble, Chamber Choir, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble and the Hilltopper Marching Band.

There is no admission charge to the Vance Church performance, though a free-will offering will be taken and tickets are not necessary to attend. However, to guarantee seating, please arrive early since the concert does fill up quickly. For more information, please contact the Department of Music and Theater office at
 304-336-8930.
