WLU’s Graduate Admission Application is an Online Application. To start your Online Application, you will be creating your unique account. Once you create an account, you can apply for admission and track your admission status.
NOTE: International Students applying for the PA Program should follow the application instructions on the PA Admissions Process page.
Admission Requirements for International Applicants:
Submit an Online Application
Please read the application instructions carefully and complete all sections of the application. Each Graduate Program may have specific requirements (Example: Personal Statement, Resume/CV, etc.) as part of the online application, so it is important to have all requirements ready when submitting your online application. Once you complete all sections and add any requirements, you must click the Submit Application button.
Evidence of English Proficiency
International Students from non-English speaking countries must provide evidence of English language proficiency. Students from countries where English Language is not the official language and/or medium of instruction can prove Basic English proficiency by submitting one of the following:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): score of 61 (Internet based), 173 (computer based) or 500(paper based)
- International English Language Testing (IELTS): band score of 5.5
- Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic): score of 44
- EIKEN Test: grade 2A
- SAT: a score of 24 or higher on the Reading Test
- ACT: a minimum score of 18 on the English section
- IGCSE/GCSE “O” or “A” Level Certificates from Cambridge International – Grade of C or better in the subject of English
- Duolingo English Test – 85 +
- IB Standard Level examination in English (Literature, or Language and Literature): IB English A1 SL or HL examination with a predicted score of 4 or higher
- CEFR or CEFRL – Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: B2
- IB Higher Level examination in English (Literature, or Language and Literature): IB English B HL examination with a predicted score of 4 or higher
- CEFR or CEFRL – Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: B2
- Freshman English (ENG 101 or ENG 102) with a grade of C or better from an accredited U.S. college or university
- U.S. high school diploma or completion of high school (secondary school), including the final three years, in a country where English is the native language and language of instruction.
Submit Certified Copies of All Official Academic Records/Transcripts with English Translations
The required documents include the complete official academic record (showing all course titles, dates taken and grades received) and Graduation Diploma or National Certificate(s).
These documents may be in the original language of issue and they must be sent directly to the Office of Graduate Studies at 208 University Drive, Campus Union Box 192, West Liberty, WV 26074, U.S.A. You can email photocopies to gradstudies@westliberty.edu, but the official documents must be submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies before you enroll in classes at WLU.
*NOTE: Certified English language translation of these academic records are required. Any translation of a document must be a literal, word-for-word translation and must indicate actual grades received, not simply an interpretation of the grades.
*NOTE: International Applicants who have previously studied in the United States are required to have the institution(s) in the United States send their official transcripts directly to the Office of Graduate Studies.
Credit Evaluation/Certification
All international graduate student applicants, must have all previously earned credit evaluated in order for WLU to have their applications considered. Foreign academic transcripts must be commercially evaluated by a current member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES): www.naces.org/members. The applicant can choose any NACES evaluator and is responsible for the timely translation and evaluation of documents and for all costs and fees associated with these services.

*NOTE: The evaluation must include the following: course-by-course, upper level courses identified, credits/hours of instruction, course grade and GPA determination.

*NOTE: Documents received by West Liberty University will be filed in the official student record and cannot be returned to the applicant.
Proof of Financial Support
Students needing to obtain F-1 visa status must submit evidence of financial support.
To demonstrate proof of financial support you must submit one or a combination of the following documents:
- A letter of financial support from a personal sponsor (parent, relative, friend) that has been certified by a bank or financial institution showing that you or your sponsor have finances to support your study and living costs for one academic year (9 months). Documentation of personal or family funds should be on bank letterhead stationery, or in the form of a legally binding affidavit. (I.N.S. Form I-134, “Affidavit of Support,” can be used to document support being provided by a U.S. citizen or U.S. legal permanent resident.)
- A scholarship agency (government, corporation, etc.) stating the availability of funds and the intention to support your educational living expenses for the entire duration of study at West Liberty University.
PLEASE NOTE: It is strongly recommended that the certification of financial support be submitted at the same time as other application material, this will help speed the issuance of documents necessary for student visa.
Copy of Passport
Please provide a copy of the ID page in your Passport and if applicable, copy of your U.S. Permanent Resident Card or Green Card.

All international applicants notified of acceptance into a graduate program of interest will be working with the Rollie Williams International Center at WLU to start their F-1 student visa process and issuance of Form I-20 or DS-2019. Before WLU can issue the document necessary to apply for a student visa (Form I-20 or Form DS-2019), students must provide proof that they have adequate financial resources to cover their expenses incurred while studying at WLU.
