What Are the Five Best Careers for Criminology Graduates?

May 12, 2020 By WLU Webmaster

A master’s degree in criminology prepares you for a rewarding career, no matter where you are or how far along you are on your professional journey. As the thoughtful intersection between the public and law enforcement becomes more important than ever, criminologists will be in high demand. Here are the five best careers for graduates with an MA in criminology.

Police Officer

The role of police in the lives of the average American might be ripe for reevaluation, there’s no question that people who specialize in the study and prevention of crime will always be valuable. The insight granted by an education in criminology provides an ability to critically analyze any possible scenario, determine an optimal outcome, and help decrease crime across the entire landscape of modern life.

Detective

Flowing naturally from the police officer is the job of a detective. Although not required, a master’s in criminology will help you solve the complex array of crimes that call for the kinds of skills and insight that a graduate learns. As technology makes for new kinds of crime, state-of-the-art education in criminology is a must-have.

Forensic Investigator and

Crime Scene Investigator

When the detectives investigate a crime scene, it’s often up to the forensic investigators to do the important work of collecting and analyzing physical evidence. Crime scene investigators are also invaluable, as they assist the detectives and other examiners  Once a crime has been solved and the perpetrators face trial, these professionals are once again called upon in order to prepare the evidence for presentation and explanation by attorneys on both sides.

Forensic Accountant

As crime becomes more and more sophisticated, it’s often up to professional accountants to connect the dots left behind by unscrupulous criminals. Al Capone was ultimately brought down not for the violence he’s alleged to have committed or ordered, but for tax evasion. We have forensic accountants to thank for that, as they found the discrepancies and telltale signs of a person skirting tax laws.
