Students Stage Seven One-Acts on Four Nights

May 1, 2018 By Maureen Zambito

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., May 1, 2018 — WLU theater students try their hand at directing during the Night of One Acts which occurs this week. Six students will stage acclaimed one act plays in Kelly Theatre at 7:30 p.m., May 1-4.

“Our students have worked hard on this group of one-acts and we invite everyone to join us as we see the result of their work,” said Maggie Balsley, adjunct professor of theatre.

The final assignment of the theater directing class, the one-act plays are free and open to public, though seating is limited due to the staging of the plays.

Titles, dates and directors are as follows:

7:30 p.m., May 1 and May 3, four one acts will be performed: “3 a.m. Wake up Call,” by E. R. Schultz and “The Still Alarm” by George S. Kaufman, directed by Amanda Tamplen; “Trifles” by Susan Glaspell, directed by Ingrid Young and “Interior Panic” by Tennessee Williams, directed by Chris Rees.

7:30 p.m., May 2 and May 4, “Interviews with Loneliness” by Ann Wuehler, directed by Callie Carroll; “Long Ago and Far Away” by David Ives, directed by Alex Burdick and “27 Wagons Full of Cotton” by Tennessee Williams, directed by Sarah Lemley.

All the student directors are juniors except for Ingrid Young, who is a senior and will graduate on May 12. Lemley is an interdisciplinary music and theatre major and all other directors are theatre majors. The director’s showcase last took place two years ago and it occurs whenever the directing class comes back into rotation.

The WLU Theatre Program is part of WLU’s College of Arts and Communication.

Committed to providing a variety of opportunities for students in performance, it develops well-rounded artists prepared to enter the world of professional theatre or graduate studies.
