Non-Traditional Student Selected for Scholarship

May 22, 2018 By Maureen Zambito

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., May 22, 2018 — West Liberty University student Crystal Jozwick of Wheeling received a $500 scholarship recently from the Ohio Valley Business and Professional Women’s Group.

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants had to be a non-traditional female college student going back to school. Jozwick is enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership and Administration (BLA) degree program, housed at the Highlands Center.

Crystal Jozwick is shown on left, accepting her award from Sara Lane the president of Ohio Valley Business and Professional Women’s Group.

Jozwick is earning a degree while employed full-time and caring for a family.

“The School of Professional Studies and Dr. Thomas Michaud make it so easy to return to school, my only regret is not doing it sooner,” she said. “I’ve enjoyed all of my classes, and the faculty are very friendly and helpful. The best thing is spending the entire program with the same classmates. We’ve come to know each other well and we support one another.”

Also a Wheeling native, Jozwick is married and has a 17-year old son who attends Wheeling Park High School. She is employed at the Northern Panhandle Parents as Teachers program at Brooke Hancock Family Resource Network in Weirton.

WLU’s BLA program is designed to be convenient for adults returning to college. Classes meet for four hours in-seat every Saturday at the Highlands Center. Jozwick expects to graduate in May of 2019 and then begin a career in capacity building.

“We are proud of Crystal and thank the Ohio Valley Business and Professional Women’s Group for supporting our students in this manner. West Liberty University offers several ways for adults to return to college and earn a degree quickly and conveniently,” said Dr. Thomas Michaud, Dean of the School of Professional Studies.

The Ohio Valley Business and Professional Women’s Group is open to any woman in the Ohio Valley and includes 32 members who meet monthly, September through May, on the third Tuesday of each month.

According to its president, Sara Lane, the group’s mission is to work to achieve equality for women in the workplace, through advocacy, education, lobbying efforts and other programs. Lane is employed as controller at Acuity Specialty Hospital of the Ohio Valley.

The BLA will begin two new cohorts soon, at the end of August. One meets on Saturdays at the Highlands and the other one meets on Thursday evenings in Weirton.

For more information on the BLA, please contact Dr. Michaud or Program Assistant Mary Lou Conley at 304-217-2800, Ext. 4.
