West Liberty University Hosts Ohio County Social Studies Fair

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — West Liberty University recently hosted the Ohio County Social Studies Fair in the Paul N. Elbin Library, welcoming elementary school students from across Ohio County to showcase research projects exploring history, culture, and social issues.

Students from Bethlehem, Middle Creek, Steenrod, Warwood, and West Liberty elementary schools participated in the event, which brought together nearly 100 students, educators, judges, and family members to celebrate academic achievement and curiosity.

The Social Studies Fair is part of the West Virginia Social Studies Fair program, an annual statewide initiative that encourages students to explore topics related to history, economics, geography, sociology, psychology, and government through hands-on research and presentation. Ohio County Schools have participated in the program since 2013.

Students developed projects in categories including Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Sociology, Psychology, State and Local Studies, U.S. History, and World History. Participants could work individually or in groups, beginning with an idea, asking essential questions, conducting research, and presenting their findings through a visual display and oral presentation.

Students must first participate in a school-level competition before advancing to the county fair. Local volunteers served as judges for the event, using a rubric to evaluate each student’s written report, oral presentation, and visual display.

Several members of the West Liberty University community served as judges.

“Events like the Social Studies Fair are a wonderful opportunity to connect the university with local schools and support students who are passionate about learning,” said Dr. Ed Shephard, Associate Professor of Education at West Liberty University. “It was inspiring to see the level of thought, research, and creativity these students brought to their projects.”

First-place winners from the county fair will advance to the Regional Social Studies Fair on March 19, which includes students from Brooke, Hancock, Marshall, Ohio, and Wetzel counties. Students who place first at the regional competition will move on to the West Virginia Social Studies Fair on April 28.

“This project allows students to choose topics that interest them and explore them in depth,” said Michelle Dietrich, Principal of Steenrod Elementary School. “Through the process, students learn how to research, evaluate sources, and present their ideas. It helps spark curiosity and encourages them to learn more about the world around them.”

Hosting the event reflects West Liberty University’s ongoing commitment to supporting education across the Ohio Valley while strengthening partnerships with local schools and educators.

West Liberty University blends a small-town environment with a comprehensive college experience, fostering students’ aspirations through hands-on learning, personalized support, and unique academic programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
