WLU Joins Town of West Liberty for Fall Festival

September 26, 2017 By Maureen Zambito

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., Sept. 26, 2017 — West Liberty University joins the town of West Liberty as it celebrates fall with its annual Fall Festival this Saturday, Sept. 30. The family friendly event takes place from noon – 8 p.m., Sept. 30 at the West Liberty Town Hall and all along Van Meter Way.

“We hope for a nice turn-out as everyone gets together and celebrates the return of fall,” said Ashley Montemurro, who was appointed the Fall Festival coordinator recently. She is married to West Liberty University Campus Police Chief Joseph Montermurro and they reside in West Liberty with their daughter, Olivia.

“I’m pleased to help out with the planning and invite everyone to join us for a great event this Saturday along Route 88. I also want to publicly thank all our donors who contributed to making the 2017 Fall Festival a success,” Montemurro said. Donors include Hilltop Acres, Republic Services, the Army National Guard, Main Street Bank, WLU President Stephen Greiner and his wife Nancy and Generations Restaurant and Pub (G-Top).

Live music, face painting, bounce houses for children, hayrides, corn hole tournament, Chinese auction, great food and lots more is planned for the day. There also will be a dunk tank with Campus Police and Alumni Director Ron Witt taking part in the dunking. All activities take place along Van Meter Way (Rt. 88 through West Liberty).

DJ Bailey Productions (Jarrell Bailey) will entertain from noon till 2 p.m. and then the Ohio County All Stars take over and play from 2:30 – 5:30 p.m. The New Age Adenas will close out the festival with entertainment from 6 – 8 p.m. All bands will perform in the Gazebo in front of the Town Hall.

The WLU International Club plans will add diversity to the day with a festive display of various traditional clothing and will also share information how to become a host family for exchange students.

From left, WLU Campus Police Chief Joseph Montemurro, joins town recorder Ruth Caldwell and Councilman Rory Barnes, Mayor Mark Griffith and Councilmen Robert Mozingo and Lee Bonar just after a Fall Festival planning meeting.

WLU Sororities also plan to be present for the day’s activities and Topper the Bear may show up for a stroll. The West Liberty Volunteer Fire Department and Campus Police will also take part.

The National Guard will have an Obstacle Course set up and there also will be a display of Harley Davidson motorcycles.

“We also will have some other games of chance geared towards adults. Plus the Girl Scouts will have a booth selling desserts and crafts they made themselves and the West Liberty Elementary School PTO will be selling peanuts from Texas Road House,” Montemurro added.

A shuttle van service also will be available, to transport guests from the elementary school to the festival area.

Fall Festival is just one of a number of ways the University collaborates with the surrounding Town of West Liberty. In summer 2017 the University and town joined forces and renewed Police Cooperation and Mutual Assistance Agreement.

The town of West Liberty received its patriotic name during the time of the American Revolution, when it served as the county seat of Ohio County, then located in the state of Virginia, from 1777 to 1797. It currently has about 1,500 residents.
