WGLZ Dials In on National College Radio Day

October 4, 2018 By Maureen Zambito

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., Oct. 4, 2018 – West Liberty University’s radio station, 91.5 WGLZ, is participating in College Radio Day with more than 300 other college stations on Friday, Oct. 5. Located in the College Union, WGLZ is a busy station where students broadcast news and music, 24-7. Lately, the radio station has been very busy with the annual celebration of College Radio Day.

College Radio Day is back at 91.5 WGLZ, shown here and located in College Union.

This year’s event, produced by the College Radio News Network, will feature content from WLU Broadcasting major, Walker Polivka. Plus, Polivka, with help from students Gabrielle Blanchard and Luke Karaba, assisted with the organization and the registration process of participating stations, reaching via email, phone calls and social media to get other college stations on board.

Polivka’s content contribution to the program included collecting an interview with musician Tommy James.

He also collected one-liners from actor Ed Asner, NASCAR driver Bobby Allison and PGA Tour Golfer Len Mattiace.

“I talked to Tommy James and enjoyed the interview immensely. He was in New Jersey and we talked about college radio and how music has evolved over his career.

He had great insight and this interview was selected for the hour-long content program put out by the national foundation,” said Polivka, who is station manager and graduates fall of 2019.

“This year Isaiah Martin is doing the 24-hour marathon radio show that WGLZ produces annually for College Radio Day. He goes on air at noon today and continues till noon Friday. We use the marathon to celebrate College Radio Day and we think the marathon is a great way to get us out there and have fun in the process. It helps highlight what makes us unique,” said Polivka.

“Actually, WGLZ began our College Radio Day promotion yesterday at noon, when participating students produced two-hour blocks of radio entertainment consisting of interviews, music and news. It’s been going great,” he said.

During College Radio Day, all participating radio stations will simulcast the “When all else fails…College Radio Speaks” program, according to Associate Professor of Broadcast Engineering Jeff Pfister, who is faculty advisor to the radio station.

Pfister said that WGLZ’s focus is to provide more meaningful communication and the station was honored when Rob Quicke, founder of College Radio Day, invited WGLZ to assist in a  leadership role on College Radio Day.

Professor Pfister also was invited to serve as a College Radio Task Force advisor for the non-profit.

ABOUT COLLEGE RADIO DAY: The College Radio Foundation (CRF) is a registered non-profit organization formed in New Jersey awarded 501(c)(3) status from the IRS as a tax-exempt public charity. The CRF was officially incorporated as an operational non-profit in February 2014. The foundation works to promote and support non-commercial college radio stations and the students involved with them, across the United States.

Through its outreach programs and events, most notably College Radio Day, the CRF raises the profile of college radio stations across the country and encourages increased student participation in the medium of college radio.

To listen to WGLZ, go to 91.5 on the FM dial or stream it live on the web at westliberty.edu/wglz.
