Enrollment at West Liberty University for the fall semester has reached its highest level in nearly 40 years, Scott Cook, dean of students and executive director of enrollment services, has reported.
“Our fall enrollment of 2,778 is the largest since 1973,” Cook said. “I am pleased to confirm we have increased enrollment for a sixth straight year.”
He added, “This number will probably increase a little before we submit our official file to the Higher Education Policy Commission in early October due to some students adding second half courses. “
The 2,778 figure represents an increase of 1.6 percent over the previous fall semester. Freshman class enrollment increased by 4.7 percent over 2010 figures, or 25 students. The number of students residing in campus residence halls also has increased by 3.4 percent, Cook noted.
The College of Arts and Communication reported the greatest gain in enrollment as a percentage of students with a declared major, from 254 to 280, or 10.2 percent. The College of Sciences continues to have the largest number of declared students, at 696. The schools of liberal arts and education, as well as WLU’s master’s degree in education program, also experienced growth compared to 2010.
WLU President Robin C. Capehart said, “The increases reflect a recognition of our commitment to our mission to provide our students the opportunity for a high quality undergraduate, graduate and professional education.
“We are encouraged that more and more students and their parents are finding that West Liberty University offers the academic programs necessary to meet the professional and career needs of an evolving, contemporary society. Whether they choose health sciences, business, liberal arts or any other field of study, WLU offers the academic programs that can prepare young people for their future endeavors.”
