West Liberty University sophomore Sara Keedy recently was crowned Ms. Wheelchair USA at a pageant in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
Her platform as contestant was accessibility and awareness of disability issues on college campuses. She explained that while she had encountered some difficulties getting around campus, “The good news is that as West Liberty now has become a university, they are anxious to hear about how they can improve the campus to accommodate more students with disabilities. I know that there are many smaller and even larger campuses across the country facing the same challenges. I hope throughout my year I can assist them.”
The renovation of the university’s oldest campus building, Shaw Hall, is an example of WLU’s commitment to increased accessibility. Once completed in December, the elevator-equipped building will house all student services in one convenient location, including the housing, registrar, financial aid and business offices.
The Wheeling resident said she is making plans for a disability awareness day on campus this fall. “It will allow other students to have a ‘disability’ – some kids in chairs, blindfolded, on crutches, etc. – for a day and go around campus to see what it is like to have a disability on a college campus,” she explained.
Keedy and the other contestants competed in a platform speech competition, evening wear, and on-stage interview sessions. Ms. Wheelchair USA is a national program dedicated to celebrating the abilities and successful accomplishments of women with disabilities. The nationally televised competition showcases the stories of women who overcome obstacles and uniquely contribute to society.
