Study in South Korea Continues

November 6, 2017 By Maureen Zambito

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., — Korea is making headlines lately but not always in a positive way. However, for WLU students who visited the East Asian country last summer, it was a totally positive experience that they will share in a presentation at noon, Nov. 8 in the Boyle Conference Center (ASRC).

From left, Kelsey Hayden, Lucas Shaver, Moonjung Kang and Mikaela DeMotto are ready to share their Korean study experience with campus.

“The summer design camp was wonderful and our students learned so much. They enjoyed it completely,” said Professor Moonjung Kang, who is a native of South Korea and has taught at WLU since 2009.

Students also had time to tour and sightsee in the region of Daejeon, Seoul and Jeonju, since the school provided a school bus to transport the students around.

This was the second time that Kang escorted students on a summer study trip. Visual communication design (formerly graphic design) students who traveled to Korea last June include: Mikaela DeMotto, Kelsey Hayden and Lucas Shaver.

Kang referred to the summer study as a kind of boot camp for design students, offering classes in Asian calligraphy, illustration, typography, branding and computer film editing. Kang also taught two classes in Design Thinking.

Kang is responsible for a growing partnership between Hanbat National University (South Korea) and West Liberty University. She has been working hard to strengthen the Korean-WLU connection, and just this past August, Korean art professors visited the Hilltop for an international art show.

“I’m pleased to facilitate this partnership and am grateful to President Greiner and Hanbat University leaders for embracing it. I want to offer our students a chance to study abroad in this manner, and to learn and see Korea for themselves,” she said. Next year, Kang will return to Korea for her sabbatical.

Kang also will speak at the presentation and update the audience on what is next for the partnership and how it is growing. She encourages and student of any discipline or any professor to learn more about the chance to study abroad in South Korea.
