Sorority Sisters Sponsor Relay for Life

April 3, 2017 By Maureen Zambito

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., April 3, 2017 — Relay for Life is back on the Hilltop as West Liberty University’s sorority Beta Rho Epsilon (BPE) organizes its annual support for cancer survivors fundraiser from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Saturday, April 8, 2017, in the Academic, Sports and Recreation Complex (ASRC). Each year approximately 250 people participate in the daylong fundraiser walk.

WLU clubs and organizations will set up tables featuring games, food and opportunities to win prizes to support BPE in their philanthropy. All money raised will then be donated to the American Cancer Society.

“Finding Dory is the theme we picked to promote our Relay for Life this year. We’ll have lots of raffles, games, prizes and over 15 vendors for a wonderful day of fun and opportunities to give,” said BPE Philanthropy Chair Mia Huck.

“Our sorority includes 33 members and we’re all looking forward to supporting the American Cancer Society again this spring. This is our third annual event and we are so excited to ask our survivors, caregivers, and donors to just keep swimming!”

Huck is a senior from Wheeling, majoring in elementary education with a special education minor and autism certification. She is currently completing her student teaching in Ohio County.

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 500,000 Americans died from cancer last year. Relay for Life events spread awareness for cancer prevention and honor cancer survivors.

BPE held its first Relay for Life event in April 2015. Over the years, BPE has raised over $11,000 from its efforts. This year, the goal is to raise $8,000.

“BPE chose Relay For Life as their newest philanthropy in 2014 after numerous sisters had been diagnosed with cancer or had immediate family members lost to cancer. We are passionate about fighting for a cure,” Huck said. “We also make about 20 cancer care kits and donate them to Wheeling Hospital’s cancer patients every year.”

Participants can pay $10 per person to register online or $20 to register at the event. Registration will be available all day.

First started in May 1985 by a surgeon Gordy Klatt, Relay for Life is now a nationwide fundraising event that helps the American Cancer Society make progress toward a world without cancer. Relay For Life events are held in communities spanning 18 countries outside of the United States.

For more information or to participate, please contact Huck at 304-551-5721 or via email at mmhuck@westliberty.edu or visit its Facebook page.
