WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., April 6, 2016 — Relay for Life comes to the Hilltop as West Liberty University’s sorority Beta Rho Epsilon (BPE) organizes its second annual Relay for Life from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., Saturday, April 9, 2016 in the Academic, Sports and Recreation Complex (ASRC).
WLU clubs and organizations will set up tables featuring games, food and opportunities to win prizes to support the BPE in its efforts. The sorority will then donate the funds raised at the event to the American Cancer Society.
“Wizard of Oz is the theme we picked to promote our Relay for Life this year. We’re trying to emphasize our newly added activities and deliver a message that there is no place like home,” said BPE Philanthropy Chair Mia Huck.
Huck is a junior from Wheeling junior, majoring in elementary education with a special education minor.
According to the American Cancer Society, more than 500,000 Americans died from cancer last year. Relay for Life events spread awareness for cancer prevention and honor cancer survivors.
BPE held its first Relay for Life event in April 2015 and raised over $4,700 to fight cancer. This year 37 sorority sisters organized the fundraiser with the goal to raise $7,500.
Participants can pay $10 per person to register online or $20 to register at the event. The doors will be open from 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. for walk-in registration and participants will walk around the indoor track for the competition.
First started in May 1985 by a surgeon Gordy Klatt, Relay for Life is now a nationwide fundraising event that helps the American Cancer Society make progress toward a world without cancer. Relay For Life fundraisers also are are held in communities spanning 18 countries outside of the United States.
