The West Liberty University Sarah Whitaker Glass School of Dental Hygiene was established in 1938 and graduated its first class in 1940. Jenna St. Clair is one of its current students and will graduate this spring.
St. Clair was pleased to learn that she was selected to receive an American Dental Association Foundation scholarship for the 2014 – 2015 school year. Only a few of these scholarships are awarded nationally on an annual basis.
“We nominated Jenna based on her work and grade point average. Jenna is also active in our Student American Dental Hygienists’ Association (SADHA),” said Margie Six, program director.
The WLU SADHA is one of the most active student dental hygiene associations in the state, according to Six. The club offers many opportunities for community service and fellowship throughout the year.
“I’m grateful for this award,” St. Clair said. A resident of New Concord, Ohio and graduate of John Glenn High School, she describes her WLU experience as exceptional.
“I love the field of dental hygiene and enjoy studying and working in the new dental hygiene clinic at Campbell Hall,” she added. “I feel that the WLU program is doing an exceptional job preparing me for my career.”
According to the ADA Foundation, the scholarship is offered with the goal of facilitating the education of academically gifted students, which in turn helps to foster the public’s oral health.
WLU’s program is accredited by the ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation and both the Associate of Science and Bachelor of Science degrees are offered.
The ADA-compliant clinic includes 24 ADEC units, chairs and operator stools, chair-side computers equipped with Dentrix software, handicapped accessible restrooms, as well as digital radiography capability, a dental hygiene materials lab and a dedicated student resource room. All classrooms are equipped with current educational technology.
