WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., April 19, 2017 — Wheeling’s Mayor Glenn F. Elliott, Jr. will deliver the commencement address at West Liberty University’s Spring 2017 Commencement Ceremony. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 13, in the Academic, Sports and Recreation Complex (ASRC).
President Dr. Stephen Greiner will preside at the ceremony and will present Elliott with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.
“It is an honor to welcome Mayor Elliott to campus as commencement speaker. Our graduates will certainly find him inspirational. I thank him for taking the time to share his words of advice and insight with us on this important day,” Greiner said.
Elliott plans to include a message that highlights ways that graduates can play meaningful roles in their communities.
Mayor Elliott was elected to office on May 10, 2016 and will serve through June 30, 2020.
A native of the Ohio Valley, he graduated from Linsly in 1990 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business in 1994. He then graduated cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center in 2001.
He served as a legislative assistant for U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd from 1994 – 99. He then worked at the international law firm Baker Botts LLP in Washington, D.C. from 2001 through 2008 as a corporate lawyer focusing on mergers and acquisitions and securities law compliance.
He returned to Wheeling in January 2009 and began working at Toriseva Law as an independent contractor attorney.
In 2012, he joined the Ohio Valley Young Preservationists (now Wheeling Young Preservationists) and began focusing on Downtown revitalization and preservation efforts.
In September 2013, he formed Market Street Now, LLC to purchase the historic Professional Building as a multi-year preservation and renovation project.
In January 2015, he opened Elliott Law Offices, PLLC at the Professional Building to focus on providing legal services for new local businesses and to assist local clients with real estate transactions and estate-planning needs.
Mayor Elliott serves on the board of directors for Wheeling Heritage and the Friends of Wheeling. He also serves on the board of Wheeling Country Day School and the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra and is treasurer of the Rotary Club of Wheeling.
Doors open for seating at commencement at 9:30 a.m. and tickets are not required.
The Commencement Ceremony will be televised live on WLU-TV 14 (Comcast Channel 14 and online at wltvonline.com.
A reception for graduates, guests and families will be held in the College Union immediately following the ceremony. Parking will be available for guests behind the ASRC.
