WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., Sept. 27, 2017 — West Liberty University’s men’s fraternity, Beta Theta Gamma, is collecting money for hurricane relief. The effort started around Sept. 6 when Irma was making headlines and will continue for another week or so.

“We just saw the disasters and the constant news of hurricanes and decided it was a great cause, so we got involved and decided to do it. We all felt the need to do something,” explained DeVante Brown of Wheeling. A senior digital media design major who enjoys editing film, he is president of the local fraternity.

Junior Corey Mirt of Pittsburgh is vice president and explained that the fraternity has about 12 active members and their focus is on social events, respect, loyalty and brotherhood.

“We’ll be sending the money that we collect onto a FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) certified philanthropy,” Mirt said. The fraternity is hoping that Facebook will match their dollars.

“The hurricanes are in the news daily and Puerto Rico is now suffering. We want to help.”

Hurricane season this year has seemed especially hard with catastrophic storms roaring in from sea and slamming Texas, Florida and the Carribean Islands.
