September 16, 2013 By Maureen Zambito

“Please join us for a most enjoyable and unique concert experience, as world-renowned mezzo-soprano, Mary Henderson-Stucky is accompanied by her husband, Rodney Stucky, on both lute and guitar,” said Gerald Lee, associate professor of music in the College of Arts and Communication.

“From the Renaissance songs of John Dowland through fascinating 20th-century repertoire, their concert program displays a wide variety of musical styles. Please don’t miss this special, opening event for the WLU 2013-14 Concert Artist Series.”

Henderson-Stucky is a professor of voice and head of the voice department at the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. She studied at the Eastman School of Music and the University of Cologne.

She has sung operatic roles in theaters in Hagen, Germany; Bern, Switzerland; and Gent, Belgium. As a recitalist, she has appeared at the Cleveland Art Song Festival and at the Syracuse University Summer Program in Switzerland, where she was also a faculty member.

She is co-director of the Institute for Advanced Vocal Studies in Paris and has recorded for Centaur Records, Vienna Modern Masters and Fleur de Son Classics.

Henderson-Stucky often performs in duo with her husband. Since their debut recital in 1991 at the St. Louis Conservatory of Music, where they were both faculty members, the Stucky-Henderson Duo has performed frequently throughout the midwest and eastern United States. They have also performed at the École Normale de Musique and the Conservatoire Supérieure in Paris, France and at the Caribbean resort, Maroma, in Quintana Roo, Mexico.

Their repertoire spans the gamut of 16th century lute and vihuela (plucked stringed instrument of Spain) songs to 20th century music for voice and guitar.

The couple has been active in commissioning and inspiring new works for voice and guitar, one of which was given its world premiere at a Guitar Foundation of America International Festival. They have been featured on WGUC in Cincinnati and KFUO in St. Louis and have recorded for Fleur de Son Classics.

The annual Concert Series at West Liberty continues to bring the finest musical performance talent that the world has to offer to campus for free public concerts and artist master classes to benefit its students and surrounding communities.

The Division of Music at West Liberty University offers undergraduate degrees in music education, music performance and music technology. Among its ensembles are University Chorus, Wind Ensemble, Chamber Choir, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble and The Hilltopper Marching Band.
