Choirs Plan Musical Time Travel

September 29, 2014 By Maureen Zambito

Music lovers will have a chance to time travel with the West Liberty University choir during a 7 p.m., Oct. 19 concert to be held at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, 1300 Eoff St.

“Our concert will feature choral music by various composers spanning nearly 400 years! Beautiful music by Palestrina, Mozart, Haydn, Vaughan Williams, Gershwin and others will offer the perfect compliment to the visually stunning Romanesque cathedral. We are looking forward to the show,” said Choir Director Dr. Scott Glysson, who is an assistant professor of music.

Glysson joined WLU this past July and resides in Wheeling.Concert choirs chapel sized

Both the Concert Choir and the University Choir will make up the choir in the Oct. 19 performance. The Concert Choir is an elite group that requires a successful audition. The University Choir requires no audition. Both groups perform together or separately, according to venue and program.

The choir is shown in the West Liberty University Chapel, during rehearsal.

“Choir brings about enjoyable new experiences and allows me to help make a difference both on campus and in the community. Best of all, we all are doing what we love with the people we care about!” said Kimberly Wolfe, a music education major with a focus on voice from McMechen, W.Va.

Approximately 50 students are in the performance choir and they will be accompanied by pianists John Rose and Deborah Barlow.

“The West Liberty University Choral Department allows students to create impeccable music with talented musicians, while creating a family like atmosphere where all students feel welcome,” said Carrie George, junior vocal performance major from Adena, Ohio.

The concert is free and open to the public. A freewill donation will be taken to support opportunities for WLU Choral Students.

“The West Liberty Choirs kindle good spirits and a sense of purpose through the knowledge that you are a part of something capable of creating beautiful, moving music that no single person could ever achieve,” commented music major Andrew Leaptrot, Kenna, W.Va.

The Division of Music at West Liberty University offers undergraduate degrees in music education, music performance and music technology. Other ensembles are the Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, and the Hilltopper Marching Band.

The Cathedral of St. Joseph is a contributing property to the East Wheeling Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was dedicated in April 1926 and is home to the oldest Roman Catholic congregation in the city of Wheeling.
