Being a Collegiate Music Major

January 14, 2016 By Maureen Zambito

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., Jan. 15, 2016 — West Liberty University’s Department of Music and Theater will present a free workshop at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Highlands Center campus to address questions on the process and result of earning a music degree.

This special workshop, geared towards pre-college musicians, will provide information about majoring in music as well as an overview of music careers for prospective college students, according to Dr. Matthew Harder, interim dean of the College of Arts and Communication.

WLU offers music majors many opportunites to perform, such as commencement.

WLU offers music majors many opportunities to perform, such as fall and spring commencement.

“Discussion will take place on the audition process, scholarships available, what being a music major entails and what the prospects are after graduation. The information gained can be applied to any college or university music program, not just West Liberty’s but of course we hope that students will discover the value of our program,” he said.

WLU’s music program has a long history of excellence and claims successful graduates in many fields including performers such as local jazz great Curtis Johnson and country superstar Brad Paisley.

“Auditioning for a collegiate music program can be very stressful, but we will demystify the process and give students the tools and knowledge needed to work towards a successful audition for any college. We will talk about how institutions offer scholarships and ways that you can maximize your scholarship awards. We’ll also talk about what it means to be a music major. What is life like for a typical college music major? We’ll show you what’s expected of you and give you the keys to success. Finally, we’ll talk about what to do after graduation, whether it be entering the workforce, or continuing for an advanced degree in music,” Harder said.

Music education, music performance and music technology are the three undergraduate music degrees offered by WLU.

All interested prospective students are welcome to attend and special prizes will be awarded to attendees.

The Highlands Center is located along Cabela Drive in the Highlands shopping complex, near the Marquee Cinema. For more information please call the Highlands at 304-217-2800 or email Harder at mharder@westliberty.edu.
