Baseball Team Steps up for Alyson’s Angels

November 6, 2014 By Maureen Zambito

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., Nov.  6, 2014 — West Liberty University’s baseball team stepped up to the plate and assisted local nonprofit Alyson’s Angels Inc. during October by selling shopping coupons to Boscov’s.

Hilltopper team captains are shown presenting donation to Alyson. From left, Clay Francis, Jon-Michael Brunner, Renee Marchese just behind Alyson Hehr, Mike Reef and Anthony Pierro. Captain Bruce Knisley is absent.

“We support Alyson’s Angels throughout the year and the money we raised in the Boscov’s promotion was added to our season donor Gumby’s donation bringing our total donation to $3,200,” said Coach Eric Burkle.

“I commend the baseball team and coaches for their community service. My daughter Alyson began Alyson’s Angels when she was in 8th grade. She continues to raise money to create care packages for families who have babies in the NICU at WVU Children’s Hospital,” explained Alyson’s mother Renee Marchese.

“Alyson is a NICU graduate and now a healthy sophomore in college. When the baseball team heard about her organization, they decided to adopt her organization. They have assisted us in raising money and have even enlisted the help of one of their corporate sponsors. They have done a tremendous job in working with our organization. One player, who drives past Morgantown on his way home, even offered to deliver packages for us. These boys, following their coaches lead, are an asset to our community,” said Marchese.

The Hilltopper Baseball Team sold Boscov’s coupons for the recent Oct. 21 Friends Helping Friends community shopping promotion that raised money for local non-profits. Gumby’s, a local merchant, provided the additional support.

The check was presented to Renee and Alyson on Oct. 17, during a fall baseball game at the Hilltopper’s field.

In the near future, the entire team also plans to travel to the WVU NICU and tour the unit with Alyson, according to Coach Burkle.
