March 26, 2014 By Maureen Zambito

The following press release was written by Media Relations Intern Kacie Murray, a junior public relations major from Lumberport, W.Va.

The Hughes Lecture Series welcomes author Kelcey Parker, for two public events this March on the Hilltop campus.

  • Hughes Lecture, 7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 27, “Haunted Houses: The Architecture of Stories” in R. Emmett Boyle Conference Center.
  • Fiction Reading, noon, Friday, March 28 in Alumni Lounge, College Union.0cf53cb912b66dc6b93c64d7a58f5511_lzis

Parker is the author of “Liliane’s Balcony,” a Rose Metal Press publication, a novella set at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater. She writes fiction, nonfiction and nonpoetry.

Her story collection, “For Sale by Owner,” a Kore Press publication, won the 2011 Next Generation Indie Book Award in Short Fiction and was a finalist for the 2012 Best Books of Indiana in Fiction.

She is the recipient of an Individual Artist’s Grant from the Indiana Arts Commission and a Promise Award from the Sustainable Arts Foundation.

Her stories have appeared in numerous literary journals including Notre Dame Review, Bellingham Review, Santa Monica Review, Indiana Review, Third Coast, Redivider, Western Humanities Review, and Image.

Parker currently directs the creative writing program at Indiana University South Bend.

The Hughes Lecture Series was begun in the 1970s by former WLU professor, Dr. Raymond Grove Hughes, a beloved professor who joined West Liberty in 1931. Thanks to his endowment, the series has brought a wide range of speakers to the University, including: Dr. Ralph Abernathy, confidant of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; Eugene McCarthy, U. S. Senator and presidential candidate in 1968; and John Simon, noted film critic and West Virginia writer and NASA scientist Homer Hickam.
