WHEELING, W.Va., Jan. 23, 2018 — One of the area’s most experienced surgeons, Dr. Howard Shackelford, has joined the staff at Wheeling Hospital.
Because of his experience and expertise in numerous surgical procedures, Shackelford has been named chair of the hospital’s cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery services.
Shackelford, a Wheeling native, has been performing surgery in the area for more than 30 years. He will maintain his offices at 46150 National Road West, St. Clairsville, and 2201 Chapline St., Wheeling.
He earned a bachelor’s degree at West Liberty State College and received a medical degree at West Virginia University. His thoracic and cardiovascular surgery residency was performed at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.
His experience includes general surgery, thoracic surgery, cardiovascular surgery, breast surgery and trauma surgery.
In addition to his medical practice, Shackelford is medical director of the Department of Physician Assistant Sciences at West Liberty University. He also is vice president of research and development at S&S Surgical Corp., Wheeling, where he developed and patented the Shackelford Scalpel.
Shackelford is a fellow in the American College of Surgeons, American College of Cardiology and American College of Angiology. Among his memberships are the American College of Surgeons, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Society of Critical Care Medicine, American Society of Angiology, American Society of Breast Surgeons and American Society of Professionals in Patient Safety. He also is a member of the City of Hope Clinical Cancer Genetics Community.
A former member of the WLU Foundation board, Shackelford was named to the WLU’s Wall of Honor in 2001.
