Physician Assistant Students Sponsor Spicy Fun

March 9, 2018 By Maureen Zambito

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., March 9, 2018 — Spicy chili on a cold winter day is becoming a tradition with the West Liberty University Physician Assistant Student Society. The student group named its most recent winner in its annual Chili Cook-Off on Feb. 4.

The winning chef Abbey Griffith is shown holding the award, surrounded by members of the Speech Pathology and Audiology Club.

Speech and Pathology major Abbey Griffith of Wheeling was named the winning chef. Griffith is also a Presidential Scholarship honoree.

“The Physician Assistant Student Society would like to congratulate our fellow health science majors from the Speech Pathology and Audiology program for winning our third annual Health Sciences Chili Cook-off!” said first year PA master’s program student Jenna Ogden of Steubenville, Ohio.

“This is one of the fun, interactive activities that PA students do to meet and mingle with other students in the health sciences here at Campbell Hall,” Ogden said. Senior Dental Hygienists Courtney Amsler, Breona Brown, Laken Curtis as members of the Students American Dental Hygienist Association helped with the contest.

“Because the master’s program is intense and students must work hard on classes, clinical rotations and testing, the cooking for fellowship helps them relax and meet other students preparing for careers in the health sciences,” Ogden added.

Each health science club was invited to enter a winning recipe and those that participated brought their chili in a crockpot to the judging, which was held in the R. Emmett Boyle Center.

Chili chefs included students from the PA program, the Pre-PA Club, the Dental Hygiene Club, the Speech Pathology and Audiology Club, and Chi Beta Phi (an interdisciplinary scientific honorary for undergraduates).

The honor of First Place includes an official Chili Cook-Off medal and of course, all important bragging rights. Coming in at second place was the PA master program students themselves.

Judges for the cooking contest include: WLU President Dr. Stephen Greiner, Campus Police Chief Joseph Montemurro and Dean of the College of Sciences, Dr. Robert Kreisberg.

After the judges came to the decision, everyone in attendance was invited to enjoy the remainder of the chili dishes.

The WLU PA Student Society is affiliated with the National PA Student Society and meets a couple times a month for interaction and to find ways to give back to campus and the community. Assistant Professor Jennifer Childers is the advisor.

WLU’s Physician Assistant Studies master degree program welcomed its first class in the summer of 2012 and continues to attract students from all over the country. It is one of the programs housed in Campbell Hall of Health Sciences. Others include: Medical Laboratory Science, Dental Hygiene, Nursing, Psychology and Speech Pathology and Audiology.
