Biography
Dr. Harper’s primary research areas are 19th Century Philosophy and Ethics, with particular interest in Friedrich Nietzsche. His current research explores Nietzsche’s moral psychology and the nature of value and normative assessment in Nietzsche’s work. His recent publications explore Nietzsche’s work on nihilism, value, and political philosophy. Dr. Harper is also an active scholar in the philosophy of sport, with recent publications on the fairness of playoffs and the nature of collegiate sports. His current work in this field involves the development of a theory of sport, with reference to philosophy of law. Dr. Harper also has research interests in political philosophy and ancient philosophy, especially interpretation of Socrates and Hellenistic philosophy.
Outside the academy, Dr. Harper can often be found running and hiking on local trails. He is an avid fan of all baseball, and the Kansas City Royals in particular. He enjoys reading ancient and 19th-20th Century history and literature and watching movies starring Bill Murray or Harrison Ford, along with many television comedies.
