Local students and residents will have the opportunity to see the world without leaving the Hilltop in November, as West Liberty University’s international community hosts a diverse array of programs during International Education Month.

This annual event is is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. The event is organized by the International Center in partnership with the Campus Internationalization Committee at WLU, and is possible thanks to individuals from our international community who volunteer each year.

2018 STUDY ABROAD PHOTO CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Students, faculty, and staff were encouraged to make their vote online at the contest page after submissions closed in late October. Of those submissions, two winners were chosen. Linda Hall, a senior Disability Services major, won first place. She received an iPad Mini for her photograph of the Princes’ Garden in Würzburg. Brooke Thomas, a junior Elementary Education major, won second place. She received an Echo Dot for her photograph of her with the Neuschwanstein Castle.

Teaching beyond the walls: Connecting Classrooms via Virtual Exchange

Presentation by Dr. Megan Gibbons from Glenville State College on WLU campus.
Dr. Megan Gibbons is Coordinator of International Education for the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission. In this capacity, she oversees the HEPC J-1 Consortium, the GlobalWV education abroad programs, and the statewide virtual exchange Collaborative Online International Learning program. Dr. Gibbons is also a tenured Associate Professor of Spanish at Glenville State College. In addition to teaching language, literature and culture, she serves as Director of International Programs at Glenville State, focusing especially on virtual exchange and faculty-led study abroad. Dr. Gibbons received her Ph.D in Hispanic Language and Literature from Boston University. Her international living and work experience includes time spent in Italy and Panama, as well as completing a master’s degree in Madrid and a Fulbright placement in Oviedo, Spain where she conducted research on COIL.

Dr. Vishaka Maskey, International students from WLU and FLEX exchange students from WPHS joined other community members at Steenrod for their first International Fair. Students young and older had a great time.

Dr. Vishakha Maskey and Dr. Aron Massey attended FACDIS workshop in Morgantown, WV.
Dr. Maskey attended session titled: Collaborative Teaching/ learning at International Studies Classroom. This session provided both philosophical foundations and practical advice about how to create stimulating and effective learning environments through the use of collaborative learning techniques. Participants learned pedagogical techniques and practice their use in small “base” groups.
Dr. Brian Fitzpatrick presents at International Conference

Dr. Fitzpatrick is an Internationalization Committee member and a Professor of Political Science at the College of Liberal Arts. He will be presenting a paper titled Overcoming Income and Interest Groups: Saliency and Representative Responsiveness at Northeastern Political Science Association Conference. The conference takes place in Montreal, Canada between Nov. 8th-Nov. 10th, 2018.

Taste of 2017 International Month:

- Presented by the Polish Cultural Council, Pittsburgh Filmmakers, and the Polish Film Festival in America.
- Regular admission $10, students $8Nov 17th screening with director and reception $15
- WLU students who wish to go on the field trip to The Butler screening on Saturday, Nov.17 @ 7 p.m please contact prof. Martyna Matusiak by Friday Nov. 9th. After the screening, there will be Q&A session with director and reception.
