Show of hands- who has a syllabus that states late work is unacceptable?  Now, who accepts late work, even if grudgingly?  Me, too, on both counts.   Honestly, late work is a pain for faculty.  It is also a pain for students.  This morning my inbox had an article from Faculty Focus called A Headache-Free Late Work Policy by Laura Schisler, PhD.  In it, Dr. Schisler discusses her late work policy and how it could be beneficial to both students and faculty.  As long as students and faculty are human, there will be work that is not completed on time. There will be faculty who refuse to accept it and faculty who run themselves ragged in an effort to keep track of who has not done what and the special extended deadline they set for them. Let’s figure out how to provide an equal opportunity to all students so as to account for family emergencies, illness, forgetfulness, and well, humanness.
