The WLU Highlands Center will host the Governor’s Highway Safety Program (GHSP) for Child Passenger Safety on Saturday, Dec.18 from Noon to 3 p.m.
This grant-funded program provides materials, training and supplies needed to educate the public on Child Passenger Safety. Certified officers from the Wheeling Police Department as well as WLU Campus Police will be on hand to inspect the proper installation of child car safety seats.
Sgt. Phil Redford from the Wheeling Police Department is the local Highway Safety Coordinator who is leading the efforts of this program at the WLU Highlands Center. “The Child Passenger Safety program is a key component of the highway safety program. We hold these clinics to help provide education to install safety seats, to ensure that the child is using the correct seat for their size and weight and to inspect the car seat for correct installation,” explained Redford. “The most important aspect of these clinics is education. We want to educate the parents on the proper installation of child car seats so even after the clinic, they know that their child is safe,” he added.
The GHSP for Child Passenger Safety will also provide free car seats for those that are found damaged or defective during the inspection process.
