WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — Students from West Liberty University’s Student American Dental Hygienists’ Association (SADHA) participated once again in the annual Wheeling and Moundsville Christmas Parades, continuing a long-standing tradition that began in 2005.
Each year, first- and second-year Dental Hygiene students design and build a themed parade float, incorporating creative elements that highlight the importance of oral health. Planning for the project begins in August when students return to campus.
At this year’s Moundsville parade, SADHA students handed out 4,000 toothbrushes to children and families along the route. The group has developed a strong local following — many parade attendees recognize the float immediately and even chant “toothbrush, toothbrush!” as the students pass by.
“For the past 20 years, SADHA has participated in the Wheeling and Moundsville Christmas Parades,” said Jennifer Blaskovich, SADHA Advisor. “Students begin planning and designing their float in August when they return to campus. Each year students choose a different theme but try to incorporate dental into their design.”
Blaskovich added that the students’ commitment extends beyond the parade route.
“I’m so proud of the SADHA students,” she said. “They each give four hours of service per semester participating in various community events. This project really brings them together and gives them a fun way to give back to the community.”
The parades provide an opportunity for WLU Dental Hygiene students to engage directly with the public, promote oral health, and represent the University in two of the region’s most well-attended holiday events.
