West Liberty, W.Va. October 15, 2025 — West Liberty University is pleased to welcome interdisciplinary artist Zane Miller and his work to the Nutting Gallery.
The exhibition opening, titled “Perceived Protocols,” will be held on Wednesday, October 15th, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A question-and-answer session with the artist will be held at 6:00 p.m. The exhibition will remain open until November 6th.
Zane A. Miller, living in Wheeling WV, is an interdisciplinary artist using the genres of photography, painting, and installation. Zane’s artistic practice is derived from an interest in exploring perception, in order to understand the detailed nature of experience. Relating to the investigative veins of Andrea Fraser, Fred Sandbeck, Sol Lewitt, Bruce Nauman, and Dan Graham among others, his work aims to enforce the contrast between perceptual and physical experience of space, while allowing viewers to become aware of their participation as subject and object. Zane’s artworks often exist in the space between a presence and void, functioning at the intersection of the geometric object and experience. The self is introspective and is surveilled; unconscious and self-conscious; lost and found. It is acknowledged as present, a fact and fiction. More information about Zane and his work can be found at www.zaneamiller.com and on Instagram at Zane.a.Miller.
“This type of exhibition is something new for the Nutting Gallery,” said Brian Fencl, Director of the Nutting Gallery. “Zane’s art interacts with the viewer in a complex way and requires the viewer to be involved in ways most of our exhibitions do not.” Fencl continued with “you have work that is part sculptural; it’s physical and you can relate to it, it’s perceptual and interactive meaning you need to move around it, touch it, look at it from unusual angles and wait for time to pass so you can see it in new ways. It is also light based and some things can only be perceived in the photographs you take.”

Artwork presented in the show made possible through a FY25 Professional Development grant with financial assistance from the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History and the National Endowment for the Arts, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.
