WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — West Liberty University will celebrate its Spring 2026 Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 9, at 11 a.m. inside the Academic, Sports, and Recreation Complex (ASRC) on the University’s main campus in West Liberty.
The ceremony will recognize students completing degree requirements across undergraduate and graduate programs. Graduates represent a wide range of majors across the College of Sciences, Gary E. West College of Business, College of Education and Human Performance, and the College of Liberal and Creative Arts, as well as several graduate programs.
The ceremony will also mark a historic milestone for West Liberty University as the University celebrates the first graduating class of its new Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) Program. Eight graduates will receive their doctoral degrees during the commencement ceremony.
Commencement Speaker and Honorary Degree
Stephanie Shaw, a West Liberty University alumna and Vice President of Global Corporate Products at InterContinental Hotels Group, will deliver the commencement address. Shaw will also receive an honorary degree in recognition of her leadership in global technology, innovation, and service.
A native of Weirton, West Virginia, Shaw earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a specialization in Marketing from West Liberty University in 1997 before going on to earn a Master’s Degree in Labor Relations from West Virginia University. Her professional career includes leadership roles at InterContinental Hotels Group, The Wendy’s Company, and Oracle, where she has led enterprise technology initiatives and advanced global business operations.
Shaw currently serves on the West Liberty University Board of Governors and was inducted into the Alumni Wall of Honor in 2023. She remains deeply connected to the University through her family legacy and philanthropic support, including the establishment of the Carole Lynn Harris Scholarship in honor of her mother.
Student Speaker
The Spring 2026 student speaker is Ryan Zumpano, a Computer Information Systems major with double minors in Data Analysis and Marketing from Shadyside, Ohio.
An Elbin Scholar graduating Summa Cum Laude, Zumpano maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout his academic career. He was actively involved in campus life, performing with the WLU University Band and Wind Symphony for eight semesters and serving in leadership roles with Cru Bible Study, including two years as president.
Following graduation, Zumpano will begin a full-time position secured through his internship experience.
President Tim Borchers will congratulate graduates and reflect on the accomplishments of the Class of 2026.
“Commencement is one of the most meaningful traditions at West Liberty University,” Borchers said. “This class has demonstrated resilience, leadership, and a commitment to excellence both inside and outside the classroom. We are proud of their accomplishments and excited to see the impact they will make in their careers and communities.”
Shaw also shared a message for graduates as they prepare to take the next step in their journeys.
“West Liberty gave me a foundation that shaped both my career and my values,” Shaw said. “As graduates move forward, I encourage them to stay curious, lead with integrity, and remember the importance of giving back to the communities that helped them succeed.”
