WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — A group of students from West Liberty University’s Gary E. West College of Business recently gained hands-on professional sports experience while working behind the scenes at the 2026 NFL Draft in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Students participated through the NFL Teammates Program, an initiative organized by the NFL that provides localized event staffing opportunities and exposure to careers in the sports industry. The competitive program gave students the opportunity to step outside the classroom and into one of the largest sporting events in the country.
Representing programs including Sport Management, Marketing, Graphic Design, and Physical Education, students assisted with several operational areas throughout the event. Responsibilities included supporting guest services, managing fan engagement experiences and photo opportunities, assisting with the NFL Play 60 zone, working in the NFL+ Lounge, and supporting activations connected to corporate partners such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
“Opportunities like this are where the classroom meets real-world application,” said Philip Locante, Assistant Professor of Sport Management. “Our students were not just spectators; they were active participants in one of the largest sporting events in the country. I was proud to see how they handled themselves in a fast-paced environment and represented West Liberty University with professionalism.”
The experience also provided students with valuable networking opportunities and direct interaction with NFL and 1Team personnel, helping them gain industry insight and professional connections within the sports business field.
“Experiences like the NFL Draft give our students a chance to apply what they learn in the classroom while building confidence and professional relationships,” said Locante. “That type of experiential learning is incredibly valuable as they prepare for careers in sports and business.”
