WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — West Liberty University recently announced that Flip West and the West family have donated “West Woods,” a 35-acre wooded property with six cabins and additional outbuildings, valued at $1.2 million. Located just west of campus, the property adjoins the University’s Appalachian Aquatic Conservation Center and will support student housing, hands-on learning, and conservation education.

“This generous gift expands opportunities for experiential learning and community engagement while providing a unique living option for our students,” said WLU President Dr. Tim Borchers. “We are grateful for the West family’s continued support and the lasting impact it is making on West Liberty University.”

West Woods includes six cabins, each with a living area, kitchen, and two to three bedrooms, along with several storage buildings. The site’s proximity to the Appalachian Aquatic Conservation Center will allow the University to expand educational programming, research, and outreach connected to the Center’s conservation work.

In addition to supporting conservation learning in the wooded setting, the University expects to add a greenhouse on the property in the coming months. The greenhouse was purchased through a grant in partnership with Oglebay Park and Grow OV and will contribute to regional education and outreach tied to sustainable agriculture.

“This property is special because multiple teaching and research efforts can connect in one place, from conservation work and field-based biology to greenhouse programming and community outreach,” said Dr. Nicole Garrison, Associate Professor of Biology.

University leaders also will explore additional uses for the site over time, including expanded outdoor classrooms, recreation spaces, and community programming that align with WLU’s academic mission.

“I would just like to say thank you to the West family for giving us the opportunity to expand our resources that are going to be so beneficial to our students,” said Dr. Matt McKinney, Assistant Professor of Biology, whose research focuses on birds.

West Liberty University blends a small-town environment with a comprehensive college experience, fostering students’ aspirations through hands-on learning, personalized support, and unique academic programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
