West Liberty University Launches Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling Program

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — West Liberty University is expanding its graduate offerings with the launch of a new Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling (MHC) program, set to begin in Fall 2026.

Developed to address the growing need for mental and behavioral health professionals, the program provides a flexible and accessible pathway for students seeking careers in counseling while continuing to work in their communities.

“The need for qualified mental health professionals continues to grow in West Virginia and across the country,” said Dr. Susan Ridley, Associate Professor and Chair of the Art Therapy and Counseling Department. “This program was intentionally designed to reduce barriers for students and create a clear pathway into the profession while supporting the communities that need these services most.”

“West Liberty University is committed to preparing students for meaningful careers that meet real workforce needs,” said Dr. Cathy Monteroso, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs. “The launch of the Mental Health Counseling program reflects both the growing demand for these professionals and our dedication to providing accessible, high-quality graduate education.”

The MHC program is a 60-credit hour degree that includes coursework, practicum experience, and two supervised internships, preparing graduates to pursue licensure as professional counselors. Students can complete their practicum/internships in their communities (with approval). These experiential opportunities allow students to apply what they learn throughout their academic journey while gaining real-world experience working with diverse populations.

Courses are delivered in a fully virtual format with synchronous evening classes, allowing working professionals to advance their education without relocating or disrupting their careers.

Students in the program follow a cohort model, creating a supportive learning environment with opportunities for collaboration, peer engagement, and professional growth. The program can typically be completed in approximately two and a half years, with flexible pacing options available.

The new MHC program builds on the success of West Liberty’s existing Master of Arts in Art Therapy and Counseling (ATC) program, offering students an additional pathway into the counseling profession. While the ATC program integrates both art therapy and counseling credentials, the MHC program focuses specifically on mental health counseling.

Graduates of the program will be prepared to work in a variety of settings, including schools, community agencies, healthcare facilities, and private practice, supporting individuals, families, and groups across a wide range of needs.

Applications are now open for both Fall and Spring entry points, with deadlines of July 1 for Fall admission and November 1 for Spring admission.
