WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — Approximately 95 faculty members gathered at West Liberty University on April 2, 2026, for Canvas Day, a full-day professional development event focused on enhancing teaching, learning, and student engagement through innovative instructional technologies.

Hosted by the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Online Education, the event offered both in-person and virtual participation options, reflecting the university’s commitment to accessible and flexible learning experiences.

The program featured a diverse lineup of sessions designed to strengthen instructional practices. Topics included integrating artificial intelligence as a teaching tool, using Canvas course analytics to monitor student progress, designing meaningful online learning experiences, and increasing student engagement through tools such as Canvas Studio. Additional sessions explored the Student Success and Engagement platform, open educational resources, and strategies for maintaining academic integrity using tools such as Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor.

“Canvas Day reflects our commitment to supporting faculty in meaningful, practical ways,” said Dr. Merilee Madera, Director of the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Online Education. “By bringing together innovative tools, thoughtful pedagogy, and opportunities for collaboration, we are helping instructors create engaging learning experiences that directly support student success.”

The event also reinforced the university’s commitment to faculty development by providing opportunities for instructors to engage with emerging technologies, collaborate across disciplines, and reflect on effective teaching practices. These efforts align with institutional priorities to foster innovation in academic programs, leverage technology to enhance the student learning experience, and support continuous professional growth.

“Professional development initiatives like Canvas Day are essential to advancing our strategic plan,” said Dr. Cathy Monteroso, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs. “By investing in our faculty and equipping them with innovative tools, data-informed practices, and collaborative learning opportunities, we strengthen our ability to deliver high-quality, student-centered education and ensure our students are prepared for success.”

Canvas Day 2026 highlighted West Liberty University’s ongoing dedication to fostering a culture of continuous improvement in teaching, faculty development, and student learning.
