WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — West Liberty University graphic design students have collaborated with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) to create a new series of collectible stickers now available in state park gift shops across West Virginia.
The project began when Jessica Dolin, Retail Merchandising Manager at the WVDNR, contacted Brian Fencl, former Chair of the Department of Media and Visual Arts, about the opportunity for WLU students to design original artwork for the state parks. Fencl shared the project with Sarah Davis, Professor of Graphic Design, who integrated it into her ART 383: Advanced Visual Communication course.
“I really enjoy bringing community design projects into my courses because they provide experiential learning for the students,” said Davis. “They get to create something real that’s useful and has an impact for an organization.”
Students from multiple levels, including sophomore and junior Visual Communication majors in Graphic Design and Illustration, as well as senior-level Media Communication students, collaborated directly with state park representatives through a virtual client meeting. Together, they discussed design goals, themes, colors, and park locations before moving through the full design process from research and concept development to production.
“Working with a real client within a classroom setting was very insightful,” said Danny Roberts, a junior Visual Communication–Graphic Design major from Fairmont, W.Va. “I feel better prepared to work with clients on my own in the future.”
“Being able to see my design come to life and available at our state parks is surreal,” added Clayton Vargo, a junior Visual Communication–Graphic Design major from West Liberty, W.Va. “It’s rewarding to see the tangible result of our efforts and to know our work represents our state.”
The stickers are currently available at Blackwater Falls State Park, Coopers Rock State Forest, and Pipestem Resort State Park, with more parks expected to carry them in spring 2026.
“West Virginia State Parks is excited about our partnership with West Liberty,” said Jessica Dolin, Retail Merchandising Manager at WVDNR. “Showcasing local artists and artisans in our gift shops allows guests to take home a one-of-a-kind, made-in-WV item. The students at West Liberty are so talented, and we are always blown away by what they come up with.”
Davis noted that the project gave students valuable experience in teamwork, communication, and professional design practices while helping them see the real-world value of their creativity.
“It’s incredibly rewarding to help young people develop their skills and careers,” Davis said. “Projects like this help them realize their ideas can make an impact in their community and beyond.”
