
WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — West Liberty University faculty and students participated in the 100th Annual Meeting of the West Virginia Academy of Science, held April 18 at Stonewall Resort in Roanoke, West Virginia.
The annual meeting, which marked a historic centennial for the organization, brought together faculty, students, and researchers from across the state to share research, collaborate, and celebrate scientific achievement.
West Liberty University had the largest number of faculty and student attendees of any West Virginia institution of higher education at the event.
Dr. Roger Seeber, Professor of Biology at West Liberty University, was recognized with a distinguished service award for his more than 40 years of dedication and service to the West Virginia Academy of Science.
Four West Liberty University students earned awards for their research presentations: Audrey Blust, Hannah Holbert, Alyssa Lutz, and Madelyn Cecil.
West Liberty faculty also continue to play key leadership roles within the organization. Dr. Matthew McKinney, Professor of Biology, currently serves as president-elect of the West Virginia Academy of Science, while Dr. Deanna Schmitt, Professor of Biology, serves as past president. Dr. Schmitt spearheaded the organization of the 100th meeting and served as master of ceremonies for the conference. Dr. Joseph Horzempa, Interim Dean of the College of Sciences, recently concluded a 13-year tenure as editor-in-chief of the Proceedings of the West Virginia Academy of Science journal and will continue to serve in a supporting role as associate editor. Dr. Zac Loughman of Biological Sciences has also previously served as president of the organization.
“The 100th meeting of the West Virginia Academy of Science highlights the strength of scientific research and collaboration across our state,” said Joseph Horzempa, Ph.D., Interim Dean of the College of Sciences at West Liberty University. “We are proud of our faculty and students for their outstanding contributions and continued leadership within the Academy.”
The meeting featured a full day of presentations, including oral and poster sessions across a wide range of disciplines, as well as keynote speakers and awards recognizing excellence in research, teaching, and service.
