West Liberty, W. Va. – August 28, 2025 – Five West Liberty University (WLU) students recently completed their first solo flights as part of the joint aviation program the University offers with Marshall University.

“A first solo flight is a defining moment in every pilot’s training,” said Tasha Taylor, WLU Aviation coordinator. “It represents not only the technical skills our students have mastered, but also their confidence and readiness to take the next steps toward a professional aviation career.”

The five students who have completed solo flights so far are Brady Bauer, Luke Miller, Jeremy Ratcliffe, Isaiah Zelaski, and Brock Bauer.

In partnership with Marshall University, West Liberty University launched its Aviation Program in Fall 2025 to meet the growing regional and national demand for skilled pilots and aviation professionals. Students earn flight hours while also completing rigorous academic coursework in aviation science, safety, and operations.

“These solo flights mark a significant achievement for our students and the aviation program,” said Dr. Cathy Monteroso, WLU Provost. “It is a testament to the quality of instruction and the perseverance of our students. We celebrate this moment with pride and look forward to supporting their continued success in the skies.”
