West Liberty, W. Va., August 12, 2024 — West Liberty University is proud to announce that three incoming students have been awarded the distinguished Underwood-Smith Teaching Scholars Award. Jillian Huffman from Wheeling Park High School, Allie Kerby from Wirt County High School, and Rachel McClung from Parkersburg Catholic High School will join West Liberty University this fall, bringing their passion for education and commitment to excellence to our community.
Jillian Huffman and Allie Kerby will both be pursuing degrees in science, while Rachel McClung will be studying elementary education. These talented students have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement, dedication to community service, and active involvement in extracurricular activities during their high school careers.
The Underwood-Smith Teaching Scholars Program is one of the most competitive and esteemed scholarships in West Virginia. Each recipient will receive $10,000 per year for up to four years, covering the cost of tuition and fees, room and board, and other approved educational expenses. In return, scholars commit to teaching in a West Virginia public school in an area of critical need, such as math, science, elementary education, or special education, for five years after graduation.
