West Liberty, WV, September 5, 2025 – This summer, members of Phi Delta Theta’s West Liberty University chapter, WV Gamma, joined Phis from across North America at the fraternity’s 85th Biennial Convention, held June 19–22 at the Westin Peachtree Plaza in Atlanta, Georgia.
Representing the chapter was Chance Maffe, a junior in the Gary E. West College of Business and current chapter president, along with several WV Gamma alumni. The convention, a blend of time-honored rituals and modern fellowship, celebrated the fraternity’s origins while charting its future.
Attendees participated in meaningful experiences such as national initiation ceremonies, strategic deliberations, and leadership elections that will shape the direction of Phi Delta Theta for years to come.
WV Gamma was honored with three prestigious awards during the convention:
- Outstanding Chapter Excellence Award (Gold Star Chapter) – recognizing chapters that demonstrate top-tier operational excellence.
- Biggers Excellence in Ritual Award – celebrating distinction in the practice and preservation of fraternity ritual.
- Excellence in Risk Prevention Award – awarded to chapters that show exceptional commitment to anti-hazing education and safety initiatives both within the fraternity and on campus.
“Attending the Phi Delta Theta General Convention was an incredible opportunity to connect with brothers from across North America, celebrate our shared values, and gain inspiration from the Fraternity’s vision for the future,” said Maffe. “Being recognized with awards was a proud moment for our chapter; it reflects the dedication and character of our members and the lasting impact we strive to make on our campus and in our community.”
The national organization of Phi Delta Theta was founded in 1848 at Miami University. The WLU chapter was chartered in 2015 and is the only national fraternity at the University.
“We are incredibly proud of Phi Delta Theta – West Virginia Gamma. Receiving three awards on a national stage is a testament to their commitment to leadership, service, and excellence,” said Kate Billings, WLU Director of Student Activities. “The chapter has worked very hard over the last 8 months with national headquarters and their alumni to set a high standard for the chapter. We are excited for them to build upon this success for the upcoming academic year.”
