West Liberty, W. Va., November 15, 2024 – West Liberty University hosted the 2nd Annual Northern Panhandle Regional Literature Fair on Saturday, November 2, 2024. Sponsored by the West Virginia Reading Association (WVRA), The Center for Arts & Education, and the West Liberty University College of Education and Human Performance, the event attracted more than 150 K-12 students from across the region.
The fair provided an opportunity for students to engage in literary exploration and demonstrate their understanding and creativity through hands-on projects. Participants showcased their interpretation of a chosen book by designing backboard project boards and preparing oral presentations that captured the essence of their books. Judging was based on creativity, clarity, and the ability to effectively communicate the book’s main themes and ideas.
“We are incredibly proud to host this event, which not only celebrates the power of reading but also encourages students to think critically and express themselves creatively,” says Dr. Angela Curfman and Ms. Lou Karas, coordinators of the Northern Panhandle Regional Literature Fair.
The event culminated in the announcement of the Best of Show winners, who will have the distinct honor of displaying their projects at the WVRA 68th Annual Conference to be held November 20-21, 2024, at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, West Virginia. These outstanding students will gain further recognition for their literary achievements and the opportunity to connect with fellow book lovers and educators. Best of Show winners included:
- Eli Yoders, Cameron Elementary School (grades K-2)
- Syndey Mlodzik, Sand Hill Elementary (grades 3-5)
- Cash Reilly, Moundsville Middle School (grades 6-8)
- Chenbin Ren, The Linsly School (grades 9-12)
