Lary Loew Hilltopper Scramble Returns to Raise Funds for Students

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., May 21, 2021 — The annual Lary Loew Hilltopper Golf Scramble, sponsored by the Cornerstone Group, returns this spring on Friday, June 18, at Oglebay’s famed Arnold Palmer Course.

“Every June we look forward to getting together at Oglebay and supporting West Liberty University athletics at our golf scramble and when it was cancelled last year due to the pandemic it was a big loss,” said Lynn Ullom, WLU athletic director. “We’re thrilled to have it back and look forward to welcoming our loyal alumni and friends.”

From left, Lary’s sisters, Sharon Saseen, Brenda Thomas, and Carol Loew join President Evans beneath an image of Lary Loew as they prepare for the return of the annual Hilltopper Golf Scramble at Oglebay.

All funds raised through the annual golf scramble support student athletes and their success by aiding the Jack Adams Hilltopper Athletic Club, according to Alexis Montes, who serves as the assistant director of Alumni Giving at the WLU Foundation.

Named after a 1975 alumnus of West Liberty, the golf scramble honors Lary Loew’s love of golf, his alma mater and his friends.

Registration and lunch begins at 11 a.m. and the shotgun start will be at 1:30 p.m. Besides 18 holes of golf, there will be the traditional on-course games and contests, complimentary drinks (3) and a special black and gold gift for all participants.

New this year is the Black and Gold Bash that follows the scramble at Oglebay’s Levenson Shelter. Entertainment includes music by the Miller Smith and Mazure band.

“The Black and Gold Bash promises to be a great time with good music, great food and the awards ceremony. Plus, it’s open to all! Golfers are admitted free as part of their golf package but everyone is welcome to purchase a ticket to the Bash online or at the door,” Montes said.

Loew’s family continues to support the golf scramble and volunteer their time to assist in registration and other duties. Loew founded the Wheeling-based company, The Cornerstone Group, a full-service employee benefits agency, and his sisters, Brenda Thomas, Sharon Saseen and Carol Loew remain at the helm.

Loew, who died at age 59 of a serious illness, was inducted into the WLU Alumni Wall of Honor in 2011.

The golf tournament fee is $500 per four-person team. An individual ticket to the Black and Gold Bash is $50. All participants are encouraged to sign up online at: wlufoundation.org/loewgolf or by simply calling Montes at 304-336-8401.
